How would you explain the difference between a blazer, a sport coat, and a suit jacket?

How to Buy a Blazer, First you need to tell the difference between a blazer, sport coat, and suit jacket.

Fascinating question, Mark. In the U.S., blazer has come to mean anything that has sleeves and lapels and is worn with unmatched pants, but there are key differences between the three items you mention. In Europe and the tonier parts of the States — especially any place where messing about in boats is a big part of summer — a blazer [above, left] usually means a patch — pocket, navy — blue jacket with gold or (occasionally) silver buttons. The landlubberly sport coat [above, center], meanwhile, originally derived from the tweedy, robust coats worn while assisting in the untimely end of feathered or furry creatures. It had pockets with flaps, often an extra flapped ticket pocket, and was of softer construction than a suit jacket. As a modern fashion item, it should still retain the somewhat rustic, earthy look of its forebear (even when made in cashmere).

Finally, a suit jacket [above, right] will always be made of the finer stuff, i.e., worsted wool, and smooth to the touch. Still, all that said, it's rarely that cut — and — dried. Life's too short.

Difference Between Sport Coat And Suit

Sport Blazers - Difference Between Sport Coat And Suit, Once the uniform of the Royal Navy, the blazer now plays a major role in the modern gent’s wardrobe. Whether worn for work or play, this timeless piece offers a stylish and smart option that can be dressed up or down to suit the occasion.
And while heavy coats and outerwear dominate the winter months, the spring/summer season is when the blazer really comes into its own, with relaxed casual versions working superbly as standalone top layers, taking any outfit up a notch instantly.

If you’re unsure how to introduce this type of jacket to your everyday look, or are just searching for a fresh slice of inspiration, then feast your eyes on our current season favourites below.

1. Reiss Muller B Fleck Weave Blazer in Navy

Dark and understated, we love the pared-back simplicity of this option from British label Reiss.

With its sleek cut and modern patch pockets, the ‘Muller B’ blazer will perfectly complement any minimal ensemble; team with cropped trousers and a plain T-shirt to hit a sartorial home run.

2. Marks & Spencer Slim-Fit Jacket With Wool

Straddling the space between casual and formal, it’s the rough and ready wool texture that tips this reasonably priced, match-with-everything blazer over to the more relaxed side of the style spectrum.

We’d team it with black jeans, a crisp white cotton shirt and pair of round frame sunglasses for a sophisticated daytime look.

3. J.Crew Ludlow Sport Coat In Brown Checked Irish Linen

Linen is the perfect lightweight material to carry you through to the warmer months, with American label J.Crew utilising the fabric across a range of its tailored separates for SS15.

This soft, earthy brown number is relaxed and easy to wear yet retains an air of formality – perfect for dress-down Friday in the office or a summer wedding.

4. Topman Burgundy Contrast Back Neck Skinny-Fit Blazer

Who says blazers have to be bland? Inject some rich colour into your spring wardrobe with this light burgundy option from Topman.

Not only are we enamoured with the eye-catching shade, but we’re also huge fans of the vintage-feel buttons and contrasting texture on the collar, which shows great attention to detail.

Wear with muted surrounding pieces – navy chinos/jeans and a white Oxford shirt – to really let the jacket become the focal point of your look.

5. Universal Works Barra Jacket in Charcoal

For a more utilitarian take on the blazer, look no further than this workerwear-inspired version by British label Universal Works.

With an unrivalled dedication to quality craftsmanship, you can expect high-end fabrics, long-lasting wear and a premium finish that’ll serve you well for many more seasons to come.

6. Suitsupply Monatuk Blue Plain Blazer

Blazers don’t get much more dapper than this.

Crafted from lightweight cotton and featuring patch pockets, peak lapels and a double-breasted fastening, the ‘Monatuk’ jacket from Amsterdam-based Suitsupply straddles the line between casual and formal tailoring beautifully.

Team with tailored grey trousers and monk-straps for a continental approach to your office attire, or combine with casual beige chinos and a simple white tee for a more laid-back aesthetic.

7. Mango Elbow Patch Jersey Blazer

Keeping you looking and feeling cool this season, Mango have released a selection of jersey blazers in seasonally-appropriate shades, with our favourite being this light stone option.

Its soft, unstructured form guarantees comfortable wear, while contrasting buttons and elbow patches add a retro touch.

This jacket will quickly become your new go-to cover-up.

8. Uniqlo Ultra Lightweight Stretch Jacket In Light Grey

Continuing down the lightweight blazer route, this versatile pale grey version by Uniqlo is next on our wish list.

We all know the Japanese brand excels when it comes to basics, so it’s no surprise that its core blazers are just as slick. This jacket is made from a superb stretch fabric equipped with DRY technology that is designed to keep you feeling fresh, dry and comfortable in warmer weather. It’s also wrinkle-resistant, which makes it ideal for that upcoming business trip or taking on your summer holiday.

9. A.P.C. Grey Van Gough Linen & Cotton-Blend Blazer

Named after the renowned artist, A.P.C.’s Van Gough blazer offers a unique take on a menswear classic.

A shirt-blazer hybrid, this four-button style is partially lined to help retain its relaxed structure, making it ideal for smartening up your everyday outfits.

Team with blue jeans and a cotton shirt for an effortless daytime look.

10. ASOS Slim-Fit Blazer in Jersey

Bringing a welcome shot of colour to proceedings, ASOS has caught our attention with this soft green blazer.

Bold enough to get you noticed yet muted enough to keep things the right side of stylish, this jersey jacket will turn heads for all the right reasons.

As always, keep other colours to a minimum to ensure maximum impact. Thanks to read this articles about Between Sport Coat And Suit.
